This is the question store owners ask most. The honest answer is that a hosted platform is an excellent choice for most people starting out, and that a custom store is not an automatic upgrade but a decision with conditions.
When the hosted platform is right
If your product is ordinary — goods with a photo, a price and stock — a platform gives you in days what takes weeks to build: cart, payment, shipping, invoices, an orders screen. Your monthly fee also covers maintenance you will never have to think about.
- Live in days, not weeks.
- A known monthly cost instead of one large sum.
- Payment and shipping already wired to local providers.
- Security updates are the platform's problem, not yours.
Where it starts to pinch
The squeeze begins when your model leaves the ordinary: pricing by size or weight, recurring subscriptions, time-based bookings, commissions across multiple sellers, or a link to accounting and stock systems you already run. You end up paying a developer to work around the platform's limits, which is a cost with no end.
What custom actually buys
Three things: a business model with no workarounds, page speed entirely under your control, and your data in a database you own and can query. It does not necessarily buy a nicer design — hosted platforms allow wide visual customisation.
Comparing the real cost
Hosted: a fixed monthly subscription, sometimes plus a cut of sales. Custom: a build price starting at SAR 6,900 for stores here, plus annual running costs, plus a developer on call. The rough rule: while monthly sales are small, the subscription is clearly cheaper. As sales grow, the percentage taken starts to exceed the cost of building.
The middle path we usually recommend
Start hosted and prove the product actually sells. Move to custom once you have a sales figure that justifies the cost, or a business case the platform cannot hold. The common mistake is building a custom store for an idea nobody has tested.
Before you decide
- Can I export my data if I move?
- What will the platform cost once my sales double?
- Do I have a selling case standard settings cannot handle?
- Who runs the store day to day, and how technical are they?
