The names are related, but they are not the same product. Git is the version-control tool that records changes to project files. GitHub hosts Git repositories and adds collaboration, review, permissions and automation.
Git is the project's timeline
Each coherent change can be saved with a reason. When a defect appears, the team can identify when it started and restore a sound version instead of comparing folders called final and final-2.
GitHub is the team's workspace
It stores the repository online, supports review before a change is merged, runs checks, and controls who may read or write.
What to require at handover
- A repository owned by your organisation.
- A useful change history, not only a final zip file.
- Run and deployment instructions without embedded secrets.
- Least-privilege access and two-factor authentication for administrators.
